The section Lot 3.3 of Struma Motorway from Kresna to Sandanski was officially put into operation with a water-blessing ceremony.
The newly built 23.6-km motorway section is part of the Trans-European Transport Corridor No. IV and was completed 5 months ahead of schedule by Struma Lot 3.3 Consortium comprising Geostroy AD и Patstroy-92 AD, GBS Infrastructure Construction AD and Glavbolgarstroy AD.
The section was inaugurated by Ms Petya Avramova – Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Mr Rossen Zhelyazkov – Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications and M.Eng. Svetoslav Glosov – Chair of the Management Board of the Road Infrastructure Agency. On behalf of Geotechmin Group the event was attended by Prof. DSc. Eng. Petko Nikolov – Executive Director of Patstroy-92 AD, Ivan Vutov, PhD – Executive Director of Geotrading AD, and Mr. Dominic Hamers -Executive Director of Geotechmin OOD.
‘Struma motorway is now 24 km longer,’ said Minister Petya Avramova and expressed her gratitude to the builders and everyone involved with the project. She announced that 25 large bridge structures, 3 road junctions, and 4 rest areas with public toilets and TIR parking lots were built on this section of Struma Motorway from Kresna to Sandanski. For the first time a motorway section project includes the construction of traffic counting and management stations, video surveillance, vehicles weight measuring stations and meteorological monitoring stations. Traffic controllers in the control centre will monitor the traffic and where appropriate will redirect traffic by means of remote controlled road signs.
Geostroy AD executed earthworks, road works, 7 large bridge structures, 2 agricultural overpasses, 2 rest areas and a great number of site-specific road construction facilities and road infrastructure utility networks. One of the biggest challenges faced by the team was the construction of a two-lane viaduct at km 415+820 (over the railway line Radomir-Kulata). The left lane of the viaduct has a total length of 709 m and is composed of 24 spans, while the right lane is 721 m long and comprises 25 spans, and each of the lanes consists of 4 sections. Patstroy-92 AD carried out 460,000 m3 excavation works and 825,000 m3 fill works; 105,000 m3 road bedding works; strengthening of 55,000 m3 road foundations; 42,000 m3 cement stabilization, laying 122,000 tons of asphalt, and other activities. In addition, a 300-m long temporary link with А-29 motorway dimensions was built between Lot 3.3 and Lot 4. Numerous native trees and shrubs for this area were planted along the motorway and additional 5,200 m2 of turf grassing were sown outside the project.
Lot 3.3 is a design-build project co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund and the state budget under the Operational Programme “Transport and Transport Infrastructure” 2014-2020.
